What is a Third-Rail Insulator ? |
The electrical power can be supplied to the train by overhead wires, or by a metal bar along the track, called "3rd rail".Insulators are required to separate the 3rd rail from the ground to prevent any electric short-circuit. The Val insulator has an additionnal function: it maintains the train laterally on the running tracks. That is why the "third rail" is also called the "guidance bar". This insulator is made of “Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic” (FRP), as high mechanical and electrical properties are required.
